Colorado Plains Medical Center Earns Coveted 2016 Hospital Award

January 9, 2017

The Leapfrog Group, a national non-profit organization focused on quality and safety initiatives, recently announced that Colorado Plains Medical Center (CPMC) in Fort Morgan, Colorado, has been named a Top Rural Hospital for the first time.  Widely acknowledged as one of the most prestigious distinctions a hospital can receive in the U.S., the recognition showcases Colorado Plains Medical Center's commitment to patient safety and quality.

"Congratulations and recognition goes to every single member of our staff for playing an integral part in our notable progress and quest for quality care.  I am proud of our hospital family and honored to be a member of it," said Dr. Gene O'Hara, CPMC Chief Executive Officer.  "This recognition is simply a tangible testament to the dedicated effort our employees, physicians, volunteers and board members gave over the past couple of years.  Our vision for 2017 is one of even greater optimism as we continue to pursue excellence in all areas of our hospital."

The selection of Top Hospitals is based on the results of the 2016 Leapfrog Hospital Survey.  Performance across many areas of hospital care is considered in establishing the qualifications for the award, including infection rates, maternity care, and a hospital's ability to prevent medication errors.  The rigorous standards are defined in each year's Top Hospital Methodology.

"Although our evaluation and selection was based on a host of quality and safety factors, I feel that one of our key strengths, surgical site infection rates, greatly contributed to our score.  Our current rate is 0.3%.  In fact, since 2012, we have averaged 0.3%.  This is below the national average and speaks highly to the type of care a patient can receive when at Colorado Plains Medical Center," adds O'Hara.  The criteria and data are based on National Health Safety Network guidelines.

More than 2,000 hospitals across the United States were surveyed and rated.  Colorado Plains Medical Center received a Top Rural Hospital distinction and was one of only 21 Rural Top Hospitals recognized across the country.

Before the holiday season, O'Hara, along with the hospital's Director of Quality, Beth Slivkanch, and Chief Nursing Officer, Sonya Bass, attended a ceremony in Washington D.C. where they were honored for this achievement.

"Being acknowledged as a Leapfrog Top Hospital is an incredible feat achieved by less than three percent of hospitals nationwide," said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group.  "With this honor, Colorado Plains Medical Center has established its commitment to safer and higher quality care.  Providing this level of care to patients in the Morgan County, Colorado, area requires motivation and drive from every team member.  I congratulate the board, staff, and clinicians, whose efforts made this honor possible."
